I set out to write a birthday song for a guy named Bob who loves the great songwriters from the 60s and 70s (etc.). His daughter and I envisioned his birthday song as a missing track from Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” However, it turns out that I can no longer think of “Graceland” without associating it with Vampire Weekend’s “Contra,” so there’s a fair dose of that in it, as well. Either way, it’s probably the catchiest song in the Custom Song Workshop oeuvre. It took me a long time to make sense of the African hand drums, but I think they add great texture to the song, while still keeping the beat moving. Anyway, less talk, more rock. Give it a listen and see what you think!
